Home Energy Rating System

The Home Energy Rating System (HERS) is a standardized system used to rate the amount of energy a home uses which can be compared with the HERS score of other similar homes to determine which home is going to cost more to own and operate. In California the HERS score is tied to the current Title 24 standards. A home built today to the minimum Title 24 standards would earn a score of 100. A score over 100 means the home uses more energy, a score less than 100 means the home uses less energy.  Every three years in California the energy code is updated reducing the amount of energy a home is allowed to use because of AB 32. AB 32 states that by 2020 our energy code will require all new construction to be net zero homes, or homes which use no more energy than they are able to generate through renewable sources on site.  For example when the 2013 Title 24 goes into effect residential construction will have to be 25% more efficient than a home built under the 2008 standards.

HERS 2 raters, or whole house raters, are individuals who are trained and certified by a California approved HERS provider on the methods, testing, and information needed to accurately give a home a HERS score. Not all HERS 2 raters are alike. AAE takes great pride in providing home owners with accurate HERS 2 reports and scores for their homes. We have always gone above and beyond to clearly communicate what the most cost effective improvements are for your home and have no interest in what improvements you decide to make. Our mandate is to document the information you need to make an educated decision on home improvement, not to hard sell you on what makes the contractor the most money.
